Account and composition book, 1881-1990 (bulk, 1881-1938).

Volume of Marlboro County, S.C., general store accounts, historical essays, and family history; account book, 1881, documenting purchases and cotton accounts of merchant J.R. Sampson of Marlboro County, into which Bettie Sampson later added editorial observation concerning individuals represented in the accounts. Volume subsequently adapted by Sampson for use in recording her essays and recollections. Compositions relating to her childhood and teenage years in Marlboro County include "A Partial History of Sherman's Raid in S. Carolina"; schoolgirl experiences; "Big Snow of April 15, 1849"; poetry and "Song verses of olden days"; and two Civil War stories attributed to Sampson's sister, Mrs. D.D. McColl (Eleanor "Nellie" Thomas McColl): "Froddie's Watch," and "Little Billy's Boots," a story about footwear made from the hide of a dog. Includes genealogical information on the Byron, Crosland, Easterling, Evans, Murray, Orrell, Sampson, Spears, Thomas, and Wyatt families and letters, ca. 1980-1990, re family history added by subsequent owners of the volume.
